the morton arboretum wedding

This year went so fast.

One minute I was building wedding timelines like usual… the next I was building in pump breaks between first look and family formals. Photographer + new mom = highly organized chaos. But honestly? Every couple has met me with so much grace. Karlee and Mark especially. Calm. Steady. The kind of people who care more about being married than about controlling the forecast.

Which is good—because the forecast had plans.

Karlee had her heart set on an outdoor ceremony at The Morton Arboretum. And if you’ve ever been there, you get it. It’s not just “a pretty outdoor venue.” It’s 1,700 acres of curated, intentional nature. Towering trees. Wide-open lawns. Hidden pockets that feel like secret gardens. It’s a place where every turn feels like a new vignette waiting to happen.

That’s what I love most about photographing weddings here—there isn’t just one backdrop. There are dozens.

You can have:

• Tree-lined pathways that feel cinematic and quiet
• Open prairie fields that glow at sunset
• Sculpted gardens with structure and symmetry
• Modern architectural spaces with floor-to-ceiling windows
• And tucked-away woodland corners that feel like you’re the only two people on earth

It’s basically a choose-your-own-adventure story, but make it wedding portraits.

Originally, Karlee and Mark planned to say their vows outside, surrounded by all that natural beauty. But the park ranger (yes, an actual park ranger—iconic venue energy) strongly encouraged us to move indoors because of incoming storms.

And thank goodness we did.

The sky opened up the exact moment Karlee walked down the aisle. Full cinematic downpour. Instead of panic, though, it created this intimate, almost sacred atmosphere inside. Rain tapping against the windows. Everyone leaning in closer. The world shrinking down to just the two of them.

And Mark.

The way he looked at her. The hand kisses. The “I can’t believe I get to marry you” grin. He kept pulling her in just because he could. It was tender and unforced and my camera was thriving.

One of the most underrated parts of a wedding at The Morton Arboretum? You can get ready onsite in their historic homes.

These spaces have so much character—original woodwork, soft window light, neutral walls that let everything breathe. Getting ready there feels less like a hotel morning and more like stepping into a timeless estate tucked in the woods. There’s space to spread out. Space to breathe. And that beautiful, natural light photographers dream about.

When the rain stopped (because of course it did, right after the ceremony), we stepped back outside and the entire property felt transformed. Everything was greener. Softer. Glowing.

We wandered through winding paths, under towering trees, across open lawns. Every few minutes we’d turn a corner and it felt like a completely different setting. That’s the magic of this place—you don’t have to force variety. It’s built into the landscape.

By the end of portraits, it felt like we’d traveled through five different venues without ever leaving the grounds.

Karlee and Mark didn’t need perfect weather. They needed a place that reflected who they are—grounded, connected, deeply present. The Morton Arboretum does that so well. It gives you beauty without pretension. Nature without chaos. Structure without stiffness.

It honors the sacred and makes room for joy.

Karlee and Mark, thank you for trusting me with your day—the rain, the hand kisses, the quiet in-between moments. It felt less like documenting an event and more like witnessing something deeply meaningful.

If you’re dreaming of a wedding surrounded by towering trees, historic homes, endless portrait locations, and that grounded, nature-soaked kind of magic—The Morton Arboretum truly offers something special.

Photos that look like art.
A process that feels like home.
